Regardless, it’s rather fast and inexpensive. But, Home Depot can only make duplicates of transponder keys, they cannot make you a brand new one if you lost the original.
In this case, you will have to go to the dealership or an auto locksmith.

This is because different stores have varying processes and this will depend on how often they have a qualified sales associate to make keys.

If you know the kind of key you need to be copied, you can purchase the blank online and pick it up at your local store. You can even call ahead to talk to the key copying services area before you do this to ensure your experience is as smooth and efficient as possible.
So, it’s important to understand that some places require you to make an appointment while others allow you to walk up to the service desk.
Also, expect to pay anywhere from $40 to $240 for this service. The reason for the expense is due to the RFID technology installed on every chip.
Why Transponder Chips Are So Expensive
To make a copy of a car key with a transponder requires cutting while at the same time programming the chip. It’s a bit of a delicate operation and it does necessitate someone qualified to do it. Ergo, transponder chips are going to be expensive.

Unfortunately, you cannot use the kiosk by Minute Key at Home Depot to make a car key with a chip. However, you can use it to analyze whether Home Depot has the capacity to copy your car key.
This is invaluable if your location doesn’t often have a locksmith or other knowledgeable person on staff.
Also, even if your Home Depot location can’t copy your key, Minute Key can direct you somewhere else that can. Plus, Minute Key has some great features on their website to help you locate a locksmith or other place to copy your car key.
So, in the event you’re out of luck at Home Depot, you’re sure to find another place with the supplies and know-how for your specific vehicle.
If you have a luxury vehicle or a rarer manufacturer, you should go straight to the dealership to copy your key.
Where Else Can You Copy a Car Keys with a Chip?
Aside from the suggestions that Minute Key can give you, there are other options to get your transponder key made.
Of course, if nothing of what’s mentioned below suits you or what you need, you can always go to the dealer. It will be far more expensive than anywhere else, but you will get a near-perfect factory copy.

- An Emergency Auto Locksmith (like AAA)
- The Keyless Shop (in the parking lot of Sears)
- Wal-Mart (using the other key kiosk called KeyMe)
- NAPA Auto Parts
- Advance Auto Parts (only certain locations, check ahead)
Kinds of Transponder Keys Can You Make in a Home Depot Store
While Home Depot has the capacity to make car keys with chips, they can’t do them all. The following list indicates the specific car brands that you can have them copy in the store:
- Ford Hybrid
- General Motors (GM)
- Toyota Hybrid
- Chrysler Hybrid
- Nissan Hybrid
As you can see, the list is extensive, but not exhaustive. Your best bet will be anything by Ford, Chrysler or Toyota.
Even though other car manufacturers are there, not all are available. If you have any questions, you can contact their in-store locksmith to help with your situation.
As long as you have a typical auto manufacturer, you shouldn’t have a problem getting your car key copied at Home Depot.
