Target Return Policy on Clothes (Tag, No Receipt, Worn + More)

target return policy clothes

Do you know what Target’s clothing return policy is or how can you return an item purchased in a Target Warehouse? Well, you are at the perfect place to find the answer to such a question.

Stores like Target are a great place to find a little bit of everything, including clothes. However, if you wind up with something that doesn’t work out, they also have policies in place for returning your purchases, within certain guidelines.

According to Target policies, unopened items, including clothes, can be returned within 90 days with a receipt or proof of transaction. If you don’t have a receipt or the item is not unopened, however, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the return.

This article explores the details of Target’s clothing Return Policy.

What is Target’s Return Policy on Clothing?

According to Target’s policy, new and unopened items can be returned within 90 days for a full refund, provided there is proof of the transaction.

For purchases made with a Red Card, the policy is extended for an additional 30 days to give you 120 days to make your return.

For Target-owned brands, you can have up to a full year to make your returns.

What if the Clothing is Opened or Without Tags?

If the clothing you have is opened, or without tags, then there is a chance you may be denied a refund. It is, however, less likely if you have a receipt or other proof of purchase.

It’s also a good idea to return the items sooner rather than later, so there’s more likelihood that a proof of purchase can be correlated with the in-store system.

What If I’ve Worn the Clothing Once Or Twice?

As long as the items are in good condition and you’re within the 90 day period, you still have a decent chance at getting a refund.

Make sure the clothing is clean and neat, with minimal or no signs of wear or tear.

What If The Items I Want to Return Are Damaged?

Damaged items, especially if they are opened, or without tags, are less likely to receive a refund or an exchange.

Depending on the condition and the store policies, you may be denied any sort of refund, or you may be offered store credit, rather than a refund or an exchange.

What if I Don’t Have My Receipt?

If you don’t have a receipt, you may have more trouble making a return. If you paid with cash, the store may have no records of your transaction, and they may deny the refund based on that fact.

If you use a credit card or have a Target RedCard or a Target Membership Card that you used, then you can provide them with that information. The information listed in your account will be within the system and can be used to verify your purchase.

Note: If you don’t have the receipt, the earlier you make a return, the more likely you are to be able to successfully return the items.

What Other Forms of Proof of Purchase Can I Use?

You can use a barcode on the Target App.

Target Delivery or Shipping Email

What if the Item I Need to Return Was a Gift?

If the item in question is a gift, then see if you can get the information for proof of purchase from the person you received it from.

If that fails, you may check to see if the purchase is recorded under their name.

Otherwise, you may have to return the item to the individual in question and allow them to return it.

Can I Return Items I Purchased Online or From Another Store?

You can make returns of both items purchased online or in different stores. As long as you have proof of purchase, you can make the return.

Turn the items in at the Customer Services Desk.

You may also choose to ship your items back to the Target Online Returns. You may have to wait for the refund, and you may also have to pay shipping costs, but the option is still available to you.

How Long Will It Take For the Refund To Show Up?

If you choose a merchandise return card, it will be immediate, with the amount on the card.

For refunds to a TargetRed Card or a Target Gift Card, it may take 2-3 days.

For online purchases it may take a little longer, and the refund may come through an ECard or PayPal

For refunds through regular credit or debit cards, it may take 5 days for the refund to go through.

For returns made through the Online Return Center, then it will take longer for the shipping and verifications to go through. It may take as long as 10 days before the refund is processed in this case.

What if It’s Past 90 days When I Decide to Return the Clothing?

After 90 days, the refund period expires. Outside of this, you are unlikely to be given a refund, even for new and unopened items.

After 90 days, you may still be allowed to exchange clothing items.

You may also be offered the option of receiving a card with in-store credit. With this option, your credit will be for the lowest price of the item within the return period, and the card will work in the physical stores only.

Are There Any Clothing Items That Cannot Be Returned for a Refund?

There are a few items that can’t be returned for a refund. Namely –

  • Holiday items
  • Limited-Time-Only Items
  • Collectible Items
  • Clearance Items
  • Undergarments without tags or packaging.

In some cases, clothing items may be part of special offers or events and come with special circumstances attached to their returns.
