Macy’s has been an integral part of the United States retail phenomenon since 1929. Headquartered in New York City, it’s still going strong and has been for the last 93 years. Because it’s such a huge department store, its return policy has many ins and outs; especially when it comes to jewelry.

This guide will tell you all you need to know about Macy’s return policy regarding jewelry. It’s not the same as their general return policy, which gives you 90 days to make a return or exchange. For watches and jewelry, you have less than that, which is 60 days.

This may come to the chagrin of many long-time Macy’s customers. It used to be that they would allow 180 days for a return.

But, they recently changed it to 90 days. However, international shipping orders do still have a 180-day window.

What Is Macy’s General Return Policy?

For many items at Macy’s, they will gladly take any return by mail or in store within 90 days of making your purchase. However, the merchandise must be in saleable condition along with the original packaging and tags. Anything bought online that had shipping or delivery fees are not refundable.

You must make a return in-store for anything you bought at a physical Macy’s retailer. If you want to return something you purchased online, you can return it at a store or by mail.

But there are some exceptions and conditions to this policy and it’s a little different in terms of jewelry and watches.

What Is Macy’s Exchange Policy?

Along with shortened window to make a return of 90 days, Macy’s has also done away with their exchange policy.

They no longer accept exchanges for items and only give refunds or in-store credit. So, if you want to make an exchange, you’ll have to return the item and then buy whatever you want to replace it.

How Is Macy’s Return Policy Different for Jewelry?

For necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, watches, brooches, and other such baubles, you have 60 days to make a return with Macy’s.

What’s convenient is you don’t necessarily have to have a receipt, although it’s advisable to have one. But, you will have to provide an email ID or phone number you originally gave with your purchase.

Also, if you’re returning fine jewelry, it will have to go through an inspection before the transaction completes. This can take up to two weeks.

If and when it passes, then they’ll give you store credit and deduct the amount for their 15% restocking fee.

Will Macy’s Refuse a Return for Jewelry?

Macy’s will refuse a return for watches and jewelry if the item(s) were special ordered or if alterations occurred. These are not eligible for a return, exchange, or in-store credit. So, if you had the jewelry sized, engraved, or ordered special, you will not be able to return it to Macy’s. Also, if the piece you’re returning has damage or wear-and-tear, they will not accept it.

How Do You Return Jewelry to Macy’s?

You can return jewelry to a Macy’s physical brick-and-mortar establishment, which is the usual method. But you can also return it via mail.

If you have an expensive item, it may be better to go into a store to ensure it arrives safely. However, if your purchase classifies as an international order, you will have to make your return through the mail.

Ensure you have your receipt and that your items still have the tags on them. There shouldn’t be any visible damage, use, marks, scars, or blemishes on it either.

If there are any certifications or other documentation that came with the jewelry, you must have those as well.

How Do You Make a Return to Macy’s via Mail?

For returns by mail, you will have to initiate it through Macy’s return portal by logging into your account.

From here, you can either refer to your order history (located at the top left-hand corner of the screen) or go to their “Start a Return” page.

Initiate the Return Online

When using your order history, you may need to use the search bar to navigate your order number or locate the item. Once you find it, you’ll see a link that says, “Return Item.”

There’s also the option of making a return without logging into an account but you must have your order number to do this. Go to the “Start a Return” page.

You’ll see several input fields where you can indicate your order number, whether it was a gift and then verify with your email or phone number. Then, click on “View Order Details.”

Regardless of which way you initiate the return, you’ll have to give a reason for the unwanted jewelry and then select a method for in-store credit.

Click “Submit” and the system will confirm your return. You’ll then print out the return shipping label, put this on the package and take it to the post office.

Sending the Package

You have to get tracking information for the package, so you’ll have to take it inside and hand it in. For fine jewelry, you may have to get insurance so that the post office will observe the utmost care in their handling of it.

Within around 10 days, you’ll receive a notification from Macy’s about receiving your return and their processing of it.

Then, you’ll have to wait another 14 days for the inspection to occur. Once that happens, you’ll receive in-store credit. You’re looking at around a month for the whole transaction to be complete by mail.


For most things at Macy’s, you can return a purchase within 90 days. But, for things like jewelry and watches, you have only 60 days.

However, if you altered the piece in any way, you won’t be able to return it. For fine jewelry items, you’ll have to wait for two weeks so they can inspect it. Once cleared, they’ll offer you in-store credit.
