What Good Sam Has to Offer: 5/5

No business would be able to function without the ability to draw in customers to their services and products.

Good Sam’s Insurance Agents will be able to help you in answering all of your important questions for which RV insurance plan you need and how it will help you.

Some RV insurance plans do not offer the following benefits, but Good Sam does:

  • Personal and Property Damage Liability: Covers you in case you harm someone else’s car or objects with your RV.
  • Personal Injury Protection: Helps to pay for all of those on board the RV and it covers lost wages if the injury takes you away from work.
  • Collision: Acknowledges any damages that were done to anyone’s property by your RV.
  • Comprehensive: Encompasses anything that has to do with your RV, like theft or animal collision. If something has happened to your RV, this will cover it.
  • Bodily Injury Liability: Should you have caused the accident; this pays for any injuries on the other person.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Protection: Takes care of you and your RV, if the person at fault does not have insurance, or if their insurance does not cover the extent of the newly acquired injuries to those under your plan.

Good Sam offers two plans for their insurance that are add-ons to your quote. Take note that the rate that follows the plans are just base rates and can become higher if you choose to pay for up to 3 years at one time.

Those two plans are:

  • Standard Plan: The base rate for this plan starts at $65 for the year.
  • Platinum Plan: It costs $80 for the Platinum Plan that offers more benefits for your RV.

These plans are added to your policy and you can decide how long you wish to pay for these plans at a time.

  1. Standard Plan

Good Sam’s Standard Plan helps with Roadside Assistance. There are three RV types that the Standard Plan will cover that are:

  • Travel Trailers
  • Toy Haulers
  • Pop-Up Campers

With this basic plan, the members of your family that live in your household, are covered under the insurance, as long as any children are under the age of 25. This means that you will not have to pay any additional fees for those under your policy should they become injured.

With this plan you will also have access to a 10% discount at AAMCO Transmission Centers if you need repairs or any other services. The discount is only good for a total up to $100 on any of those repairs of services.

If you want, you can bundle the following as well with your RV insurance with Good Sam:

  • Cars
  • Vans
  • Pickup Trucks
  • SUVs
  • Boat Trailers
  • Motorcycles

2. Platinum Plan

The Platinum Plan with Good Sam covers a huge number of RV types and still includes the coverage for you and your family. If you do not own your RV completely and are:

  • Renting
  • Leasing
  • Borrowing from a friend or family member

Good Sam will still allow you to have RV insurance on your rented trailer with the Platinum Plan. The types of RVs covered under this plan are:

  • Motorhomes
  • Fifth Wheels
  • Toy Haulers
  • Travel Trailers
  • Pop-Up Campers
  • Teardrop Campers
  • Utility Trailer
  • Sports Trailers
Travel Trailer

You can even put a number of different RVs under one plan. The Platinum Plan would be the best plan to choose if you want all of the coverage from the Standard Plan, plus a few extra benefits. With a Platinum Plan, you have access to:

  • Rental Car Discounts from Avis and Budget
  • Worldwide Hotel Discounts
  • RV Concierge from repairs to fuel locations

If you want to learn about what is going under the hood of your RV, there is an Operational and Technical Assistance benefit by a Certified RV Technician that Good Sam will send out to you.

These technicians can also set up an appointment for you at a repair shop that is closest to you.

The other benefits of choosing Good Sam as your RV insurance provider is used for both insurance plans.

The Disadvantages of Good Sam (Cons): 3/5

There have been a few undesirable things that come with choosing Good Sam RV insurance. Those disadvantages may come in the form of:

  • Customer Service: Some customers of Good Sam have talked about how their customer service team takes a long time to file their claim. There have also been reports that while the Good Sam’s website says they will answer 24/7, they are unable to be reached on Sundays.
  • Expensive One-Time Payment: When you are ready to purchase your insurance policy, the price can be a bit higher than usual. However, the monthly payments will be reasonable.
  • Understanding the Fine Print: The fine print on the contract may be confusing at times to where you may have to ask your agent more questions than necessary.
  • Personal Effects Option: While this option does cover $3,000 worth of stolen property from your RV, sometimes this may not be enough. If you have property valued at over $3,000 on your RV that is stolen, all of it will not be covered by Good Sam.

While you now understand what Good Sam has to offer you, trying to understand what you should look for in other RV insurance companies may run its course.

What You Should Look for In RV Insurance

So, when it comes to RV Insurance you want to make sure that it covers everything you need it to. With car insurance, there are a few things that need to be covered, but with an RV there are small extras that need attention.

Tips for RV Insurance Inquiry

Here are some tips when searching for RV Insurance at Good Sam with an RV Insurance Agent:

  • Use a broker: Sometimes brokers are able to hand over savings that you would not normally have if you went to an agent through the company.
  • Understanding your RVs value: Knowing the value of your RV will help your agent to determine the right price of the policy you are buying. If your RV is worth more than the policy they are offering, this could be a problem in the future when the time comes to make a claim.
  • Know your total prices: So, you and your agent could have come up with a quote, but insurance companies will always have extras you can add on. There may be extra coverages that you like, and you should know how they will come together to determine the total estimate.
  • Disclose your RV activity with your agent: If you live in your RV full-time you will want to disclose this to your agent as there may be other plans that will help give you more coverage. Or, this could just be an RV used for the weekends? Your policy’s price could lessen with this information.
  • Where will you store your RV?: The zip-code of the area that you will store your RV in can lower or raise your policy. Certain issues or problems can occur in that area and the policy needs to be adjusted so that your RV has enough coverage.
  • Consider joining an RV club: Some clubs or groups have access to discount codes that will give you a certain amount off of your premium. Even if there are no codes at the time you join, there could be some later.
  • What does their coverage entail?: Know what your coverage has included in it. There may be some extras that you missed and now want to add. Do a double-check with your agent.
  • What are the terms of your policy?: It may seem tedious but read the fine print. This shows you small details that could become a problem big problems later when you need to make a claim.

Questions for RV Insurance Inquiry

The following are questions you may want to think to ask an RV insurance agent when you have the chance, about the RV insurance company you are inquiring about.

  1. “Does this policy have certain days that I can use it?”: Some RV insurance companies work around seasons. Most people do not use RVs during the winter and spring months. So, if you use your RV during these potential off seasons, your premium may raise or lower.
  2. “I just purchased my RV or trailer. Is there a certain type of coverage for this?”: Most owners of an RV will ask this question after they purchase an RV. Full Replacement Loss Coverage is a great coverage to have as it protects your new purchase and allows you to quickly receive another RV.
  3. “What is included in my roadside assistance for the considered policy?”: There are sometimes small details or services that are not provided with roadside assistance from company to company. Make sure that the company you go with has what you need for emergencies.
  4. “Are there any discounts that I can apply now or work towards later on?”: Sometimes we just accept what the agent is telling us and move on. Although, there are lots of hidden discounts that you can apply for at the time of signing. Down the line, after you have signed you can apply for others.
  5. “How much will I be reimbursed for stolen or lost personal belongings?”: This will be tricky at times as many insurance companies will have a set limit of how much they will pay out to you and your stolen items. Discuss this with your agent and make sure this amount is seen in your contract.
  6. “Will the equipment on my RV be protected?: With either awnings, bike racks, or air conditioners being a part of your RV, you want to know that these are covered by the insurance. If they are not, the cost of equipment will add up to a huge dip in your wallet.
  7. “How will my payments be set up?”: This can help you navigate when and how much your payments will be on any given pay date. There are insurance companies that will work with you on the pay cycles so that you are covered when you need it.
  8. “Do you cover trips outside of the United States?”: Taking a trip to Mexico or Canada is common among those who own RVs. There are companies who may not cover you in Mexico but will cover you in Canada.
  9. “Is there a number to how many claims I can make?”: The lower the number of claims you make the lower your premium will continue to be. Also the less at risk your insurance company will see you. However, you want to make sure that you are covered every time something happens with the RV.

RV Insurance Requirements

The best course of action is to shop around and collect as many discount codes and quotes as possible that will work to your best advantage. Any RV insurance company will look at the following to determine any insurance costs:

  • Model of the RV
  • Size of the RV
  • Year of the RV
  • Brand of the RV
  • The owner’s driving history
  • The owner’s credit history
  • Age
  • Marital Status
  • Credit Score
  • Gender
  • Storage Location

Testimonials

Laura W

Laura W.: “Glenn not only helped me get my fifth wheel insured, but he also showed me how much I could save by bundling my car and truck insurance.

He saved me about $40 a month for the same full coverage on my truck, car and RV as I was paying for just my car and truck with another insurance company.

Timothy G.

Timothy G.: “Fantastic service. Saved us over 5k per year on auto, home, motorcycle and RV bundle policy, and it’s a 12-month policy! Took the time to find out what our needs were and followed up with a phone call a few days later. Best insurance experience I have had in years.”

Kenneth F.

Kenneth F.: “We were treated very well on the phone. Brandon was very cordial and helpful with questions we had.

The coverage is excellent, and we are saving about $25 a month from the insurance we had before.

We only use the RV a few weeks a year, so the discount price when it’s in storage works well for us. Our overall experience was great!

Do You Actually Need RV Insurance?

RV insurance may seem like one of those things that you do not need. Now, while pondering the choice of Good Sam, you may have come across the question of, “Why yes, RV insurance does seem great, but is this something that I need at this moment?”

Should you have an RV that can be considered a motorhome or has an engine and is moveable on its own, you will need at least liability insurance. Most states will require that you have liability insurance to cover your RV and trailers.

Liability insurance will cover the property and bodily injury that was caused by you. This gives you peace of mind regarding the other person’s claims.

Related reading: Do You Need Collision Insurance on a Travel Trailer?

Towing a trailer like a travel trailer means that your auto insurance can be extended to cover that trailer.

Please remember to inform your auto insurance provider of your trailer, so that it can be added under your existing coverage plan. Take a chance to look over the fine print when it comes to this extension.

Even with the knowledge that most state want you to have liability insurance, you should still consider RV Insurance as a means to protect you and the people on board.

Should anything arise while you are on a trip, you just want to make sure that things can be handled as quickly and as smoothly as possible.

Not to mention that the entire point of having RV insurance is to ensure that financially, you are covered. No one wants to come out of their pocket for things that are extremely sudden or not their fault in the first place.

For example, If someone runs into your family’s RV and you do not have RV insurance and someone is hurt, you must now take them to the hospital without being reimbursed.

This will leave you financially and mentally drained as you try to find ways to help take the financial burden off of your shoulders.
