Price Range of Pink Argyle Diamonds

Saying that the price of a diamond will depend greatly on the cut of the diamond, the clarity, the intensity of the gem, and the way in which it is set.

Whereas the most purchased type of diamond on the market is clear-cut, pink diamonds are especially beautiful and incredibly unique.

This, paired with the fact that the pink Argyle mine recently closed means that prices are expected to soar over the next few years, from an average of $60,000 to $600,000.

Why is a Pink Argyle Diamond So Expensive?

Argyle pink diamonds are extremely rare pink-colored gems, where the source of the color is unknown.

The unique compositions of Argyle diamonds are usually attributed to the Argyle pipe, which is made from a type of olivine lamproite and causes minerals such as kaolinite, zeolite, and different clays to interact with the diamonds.

However, it is believed that the reason why Argyle diamonds are pink is that there are integral structural defects within the crystal lattice.

How the Price of Pink Argyle Diamonds Is Measured

90% of pink diamonds around the world are sourced from Western Australia’s Argyle Mine, with only 40-50 carats of pink diamonds being mined within a year.

A gemologist will price a pink diamond first by the same 4Cs that every other diamond has to undergo: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat.

Along with that, Argyle has created their very own grading system of color, dividing the pink diamonds into 4 groups: PC (Pink Champagne), PP (Purplish Pink), P (Pink), and Pink Rosé (PR.

Following that, the diamonds will be graded based on the intensity of the color, ranging from 1 to 9 and using the following scale:

  • Faint
  • Very light
  • Light
  • Fancy light
  • Fancy
  • Fancy intense
  • Fancy vivid, fancy dark, or fancy deep

Of course, the darker the gem the higher the price – especially if it has a desirable secondary hue. With this grading system, a good pink diamond could fetch up to $1,000,000 per carat.

Will Pink Argyle Diamonds Become More Expensive?

Yes, over the next few years it is expected that pink Argyle diamonds will become more expensive due to the fact that the Argyle Mine – the place where over ¾’s of the world’s pink diamonds are mined – has recently closed forever.

This is due to the fact that they had actually run out of diamonds.

This means that the world’s distribution of pink diamonds has been entirely disrupted and with a steadily increasing price of pink diamonds over the past decade of around 20-30%, the cost is only expected to increase more.

With production values lowering year by year, it is expected that within 10 years, they will be of a similar value to Faberge eggs.

Argyle will continue to mine diamonds from some of their other endeavours, although this won’t include any more pink diamonds. As it stands, only two in every five million tons of ore processed there contained a single pink diamond.

Now, it is estimated that only another 500 pink diamonds will ever be found worldwide.

Price Range for Argyle Diamond Engagement Ring Settings

The setting of an Argyle diamond is another thing that you will need to consider should you want to purchase a pink diamond.

When it comes to engagement rings, there are five main settings, all with different price ranges.

Style 1: Halo Setting

This setting surrounds the pink diamond with a halo of smaller diamonds, enhancing the Argyle diamond and adding both more size and carat weight to the ring.

With this, it is important to choose a style that perfectly matches the unique style of the wearer.

Typically, an Argyle pink diamond with a halo setting will cost between 12,000 and 110,000, depending on the size of the diamond.

Style 2: Pavé setting

One of the most popular styles of engagement rings comes with a pavé setting. This is where there is a thin band, usually of gold, where the pink diamonds have been set across.

This is a great option for those who want to wear their diamond in a way that is less showy.

You can add plenty of accents to this style of ring, and it is fully customizable. One of the biggest benefits is that it is one of the cheaper settings, only costing between $3,000 and $12,000. Of course, if the diamonds span all the way around the band then this price will be considerably higher.

Style 3: Tension setting

This style of ring is where the band is a little thicker and has a curved gap to perfectly set the neatness of the diamond.

A large benefit of this style of setting is the fact that it allows the diamond to stand out by itself, with maximum light to enhance the diamond.

An average pink Argyle diamond in the tension setting will set you back around $50,000.

Style 4: Solitaire Setting

This classic setting is one of the best ways to show off the pink Argyle diamond just by itself. Usually featuring just 4 or 6 metal prongs to hold the stone in place, they secure the diamond without adding too much-added fluff.

One of the best aspects of this style of setting is the fact that the placement allows for maximum light return, highlighting the unique characteristics and hues of the diamond.

Typically, an Argyle diamond engagement ring in a solitaire setting will set you back $20,000 to $30,000. However, a larger diamond in this setting could cost around $60,000.

Style 5: Three-Stone Setting

This style of setting typically features a larger center stone which is then flanked on both sides by two slightly smaller stones as accents.

One of the main appeals of this style of setting is the fact that you can create something which is incredibly versatile: you could have two slightly paler pink Argyle diamonds on either side, two clear cut diamonds, emeralds, rubies… the world is your oyster.

On average, a pink Argyle diamond in a three-stone setting will set you back around $30,000.
