Esurance Windshield Replacement Policy (Coverage, Cost + More)

esurance Windshield Replacement Policy

Do you know what Esurance windshield replacement policy is? Well, you are at the perfect place to find the answer to such a question.

Esurance is an insurance agency—whose parent company is Allstate—that offers auto, home, motorcycle, and renters insurance. They are a relatively new insurance agency, having been established in 1999, however, they feature most of the same coverage policies that other, longer established insurance companies offer.

When it comes to windshield replacement, Esurance offers windshield repair or replacement under its comprehensive coverage plan, so long as it was not caused by a car accident. Esurance will also waive deductibles for windshield repair for minor damage, so long as you use an Esurance, a third-party partner.

Esurance is like most insurance companies because its windshield coverage falls under the comprehensive coverage umbrella, which is an optional addition to full coverage auto insurance.

Esurance Third-Party Windshield Repair

Esurance is partnered with Glas Tek for all windshield repair or replacement needs. Glas Tek is a certified glass repair company that repairs windshields, replaces them, and offers on-site service or will come out to your home to conduct the repair.

So long as you choose Glas Tek, Esurance will waive the deductible for a windshield repair and cover the cost, even if it’s something as simple as a rock chip on the windshield. Glas Tek uses a liquid adhesive that is pumped into the chip/crack, filling the voids and essentially replacing the glass, making the chip disappear.

Esurance is also partnered with HSG, which is a property and casualty insurance provider. Back in 2009, HSG entered into an agreement with Esurance that for every windshield repaired, HSG will cover the funding for planting a new tree.

It’s an environmentally friendly proposal that has nothing to do with filing your claim but might make you feel a little better about doing so.

Exceptions for Certain States

If you live in Florida, South Carolina, or Kentucky, insurance companies are not allowed to require a deductible when it comes to windshield replacement or repair. This works out great for those who want to go with Esurance for their auto insurance needs but don’t live anywhere near a Glas Tek.

Additionally, those who live in Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, or Minnesota, won’t have to worry about deductible costs either, however, these states work a little differently.

In this case, the above-listed states require that insurance companies offer a $0 deductible windshield repair add-on. The problem is, if you don’t know about it, Esurance isn’t going to come right out and tell you about it either.

When it comes to most auto insurance companies in most states, windshield replacement and repair fall under comprehensive coverage and you can’t have comprehensive coverage under liability-only insurance policies.

This forces people to go with full coverage auto insurance, just so they can take advantage of certain features that come with comprehensive coverage. If you live in Minnesota, Connecticut, New York, Arizona, or Massachusetts, Esurance has to offer the additional $0 windshield coverage.

This means that you can purchase liability-only insurance and choose to add on the $0 deductible windshield repair option, which gives you a little more freedom in how you customize your auto insurance coverage.

How is a Claim Filed with Esurance?

To file a claim with Esurance and get your windshield repaired or replaced, you will have to contact Esurance and speak with a live agent over the phone. Alternatively, you can go to your local Glas Tek and they will put you on the phone with an Esurance agent there.

The phone call will take roughly 15 minutes or so and fortunately, you won’t have to fill out any odious or irritating paperwork that is full of fine print and legalese.

Once you have finished filing the claim, however, you will still have to wait until the authorization goes through and Glas Tek can begin the repair or replacement process.

Once the authorization comes through, Glas Tek can get started. Glas Tek is also much like other auto glass repair companies in that they will travel to your home and conduct the repair or replacement right there in your front yard. It’s highly convenient and much easier for those who have to work during daytime hours.

Of course, whether or not they can come out to your home depends on the type of vehicle that you own. Most vehicles are just fine, however, there are a few which require a more mechanized process and you will have to bring the vehicle in to conduct repairs or replacements.

Smaller repairs simply require the methods mentioned above, with directly injected, clear adhesive material. Other repairs will require the removal and replacement of your entire windshield, which can often take place at your home.

What is the Deductible with Esurance?

Under their comprehensive coverage feature, the deductible for repairing or replacing windshield damage is $500.

That’s why it is so important to repair minor chips as soon as possible. Since Esurance will waive the deductible for a minor chip and cover the cost at their own expense, it’s best to take immediate advantage.

If you wait too long, a small chip can turn into a crack that stretches across the windshield. Once that happens, you will have to pay a full deductible for what could have been a free repair.

Esurance’s deductible for comprehensive coverage is twice that of most competitors, which helps them make up for their deductible-waiving service for minor chip repairs and some of the other features that come with Esurance and comprehensive coverage.

Fortunately, Esurance claims that your insurance rate will not go up for windshield repairs, but it’s always a good idea to carefully monitor your monthly costs for the first few months following a repair.

Also, once you have three or more chips in the windshield, Esurance will require that the entire windshield be replaced if you decide that you want to file a claim to repair it.

All Things Considered

Esurance’s windshield repair policy is largely the same as most other insurance agencies. However, they will waive the deductible for minor repair jobs, such as a chip in the windshield.

Esurance also uses Glas Tek as a third-party windshield repair company and if you happen to live near one, you should definitely take advantage when necessary.
