In this post we’ll dig deep into eBay’s return policy, including how to make a return directly to the seller and using eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.

What is eBay’s Return Policy?

There are two different procedures for making returns to eBay, depending on the reason for the return. If you are returning a product because it is the wrong item, is damaged, or doesn’t match the seller’s description, use eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.

If you’ve changed your mind about the product, use the seller’s return policy.

Returning a damaged item, the wrong item, or an item that doesn’t match the description:

Ebay’s Money Back Guarantee covers buyers in case the item received is damaged, the wrong item, or doesn’t match the seller’s description.

You can make a return for these reasons even if the seller doesn’t normally accept returns. You have 30 calendar days after the delivery date to initiate a return, and after you’ve started the return the seller has 3 business days to respond.

You will not be responsible for shipping, however, you must use the return label and shipping procedure laid out by the seller.

When completed, the return will be refunded to your original form of payment.

Returning an item because you changed your mind:

If you change your mind and no longer want the item, use the seller’s return policy to make the return.

In the listing for the item, you’ll be able to see if the seller offers returns, how long a time window you have, and other terms and conditions.

To find the seller’s listing, look up “Purchase History” in your account on eBay.

Once you’ve started a return (within the seller’s return window), the seller has 3 business days to respond.

Depending on the seller’s return policy, you may be responsible for shipping charges.

Which are some exceptions to eBay’s return policy?

There are a few exclusions to eBay’s Money Back Guarantee:

  • The item was received by an outside party on the buyer’s behalf.
  • The buyer did not use the seller’s shipping method.
  • The item was sent to a second address after delivery, through either freight forwarding or mail redirection.
  • The item was listed as “final sale” under eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee.
  • Trading cards: the buyer has 3 calendar days instead of 30 calendar days to start a return.
  • If the item is returned with excessive use or damage, the loss in value may be deducted from the return.

How do I return an item bought on eBay?

You can start a return through eBay’s website. You will need to return the item in the same condition as when it was received. Otherwise, the cost of the damage or use will be deducted from the refund.

Returning a damaged item, the wrong item, or an item that doesn’t match the description:

Returns for these reasons are covered under eBay’s Money Back Guarantee:

Remember, you must start the return process within 30 calendar days from delivery date. Once you’ve started the return process, the seller has 3 business days to respond.

Ebay will email you regarding the seller’s response. If the seller does not respond, eBay can step in and follow up on your return.

You will not be responsible for shipping charges. The email from eBay will include a return label and shipping instructions.

  • Once you’ve started the return, the seller has three days to respond. They may respond of one of these ways, depending on their policy:

    • Offer you a replacement or exchange.
    • Decline your request (most often because their policy doesn’t accept returns)
