Can You Use a Kroger Gift Card for Gas? (Here Is How)

Can You Use a Kroger Gift Card for Gas

The current cost of gas in the United States has many consumers worried. You might be wondering: can you use a Kroger gift card for gas?

You can only use physical Kroger gift cards at Kroger Fuel Centers or partner gas stations to pay for gas. Digital Kroger gift cards won’t work for gas. If you have a Kroger shopper’s card, you can use gift cards at any Kroger grocery store to earn fuel points.

Kroger fuel points are another great way to save on gas, and you earn them every time you shop.

The rest of this guide will go into Kroger gift cards and their fuel points program, and how you can make them work for you at the pump.

What Is Kroger?

The Kroger Company is a retail corporation that owns thousands of stores across the country. While these mostly include grocery stores, Kroger also owns jewelry stores, pharmacies, department stores, and gas stations.

It is the third-largest general retailer in the United States, behind only Amazon and Walmart.

Kroger’s headquarters are in Cincinnati, Ohio. They’ve been in business since 1883, and they probably own your favorite supermarket.

How Do Kroger Gift Cards Work?

Kroger sells a variety of gift cards for restaurants, ecommerce, and brick and mortar stores. Physical Kroger gift cards specifically work at any Kroger-owned grocery store or gas station.

Of course, your local Kroger grocery store probably isn’t called Kroger.

Names of Kroger grocery stores in different states include:

  • Copps
  • Dillons
  • Fresh Eats
  • Gerbes
  • Pick ‘n Save
  • Ralph’s

The good news is that your Kroger gift card will never expire. The one you got for your birthday that you forgot in the back of a drawer? As long as it’s got a balance, it’s still good for groceries or gas.

You can also use it along with your Kroger shoppers card to get more fuel points.

There are limitations to what you can buy with your gift card. Right now, you can only use your gift card in store, not on online orders or pick up.

As of 2019, you cannot reload your gift card with more money or get it refunded.

In addition, you can’t use your gift card to purchase another gift card. You can’t exchange your gift card for cash, except where required by law.

You can check your gift card balance online on Kroger’s website, or by calling their customer service number. When you use your gift card, your remaining balance will be on the bottom of your receipt.

Partner Gas Stations

Kroger’s partner gas stations depend on where you’re buying gas. In most states, Kroger partners with Shell, and you can use fuel points and Kroger gift cards at any Shell station.

In other states, BP and Amoco stations also have a partnership with Kroger.

Since Kroger also owns and runs its own gas stations and kiosks, you can easily use your physical gift cards and fuel points at their family of fuel centers.

Kroger’s Fuel Points Program

If you have a Kroger shopper’s card, you already have a way to save on gas at Kroger gas stations or partner gas stations. By shopping at Kroger-owned stores, including pharmacies and Fred Meyer Jewelers, you’re earning at least 1 fuel point for every dollar you spend.

Every 100 fuel points get you 10 cents off every gallon of your gas purchase, up to $1 total off.

Some grocery or pharmacy purchases will get you even more fuel points. For example, if you buy gift cards for loved ones or yourself, you earn 2 points per dollar. If you pick up your prescriptions at a Kroger-owned pharmacy, you can get up to 75 points per script, depending on a few factors.

Non-federally funded prescriptions get you 25 points per purchase.

Some grocery items will have a fuel point promotion, during which you earn more than 1 point per dollar spent.

Keep an eye out for these deals. You can also earn fuel points through shopping online for delivery or pickup.

Of course, there are exclusions to what purchases earn fuel points. Grocery stores in some states exclude alcohol and milk products from the fuel point program.

Across the country, tobacco purchases, money orders, postage stamps, product deposits, promotional tickets, and taxes and fees are not included in the fuel points program.

You’ll want to check your state’s regulations to see what is and is not included in the fuel points program through Kroger.

Keep in mind your fuel points expire on the last day of the month after you earn them. For example, your June fuel points will expire on July 31st of the same year.

How Do I Check My Fuel Points Balance?

When you shop for groceries at a Kroger store using your shopper’s card, check the bottom of your receipt to see how many fuel points you’ve earned that month.

Really, you’re missing out in a lot of ways if you don’t have a Kroger membership.
