How to Get a Duplicate Car Title in the Same Day in Indiana

Compared to many other states, Indiana makes it easier for its citizens to replace their lost or damaged car titles.

If you can’t find your title, simply go online and submit an application using their online replacement service.

You will need either your vehicle identification number or your registration card to verify your proof of ownership.

If you cannot provide this information, you’ll need to apply in person at your nearest Indiana BMV service center by submitting Form 205 (Application for Certificate of Title).

You can request this form at the BMV but you should ideally prepare it ahead of time by printing it off and filling it out at home.

In addition to Form 205, you’ll also need to prepare the following documents:

  • A valid form of government-issued photo ID to prove your identity
  • Your vehicle’s registration number
  • A verified lien release form if your vehicle has even been subject to a lien

Whether you apply online or in person, you will have to pay a replacement fee of $15.00. Online applicants can pay using an e-check, debit card, or credit card, however, applicants who apply in person should prepare cash, a personal check, or money order made out to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

Additionally, you can pay an extra $25 for an expeditated “Speed Title”, which will guarantee that you replace your lost or damaged title within the day.

How to Get a Duplicate Car Title if You Cannot Access a BMV Service Center

If you live far away from the nearest Indiana BMV service center and are incapable of applying for a duplicate title online, you will not be able to replace your title on the same day.

Instead, prepare your documents to be mailed off to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

As you prepare Form 205, be sure that all currently listed owners sign the application and provide photocopies of the ID to prove their identities.

This will help expedite the application process so you don´t have to wait as long to receive your certified copy

Additionally, if your vehicle has ever been subject to a lien, you must provide a signed and verified original copy of your vehicle’s Release from Lien form.

If the vehicle is currently under lien, the lienholder must also provide a signed formal letter authorizing the duplicate title.

After preparing your documents, address your shipping envelope to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 100 N. Senate Avenue, Room #411, in Indianapolis, Indiana, 46204.

You should include a money order, cashier’s check, or personal check valued at $15.00, payable to the Indiana BMV.

If all of your documents are verified without incident, you should receive a duplicate title within a few days. If the BMV requires more information, the application process could take up to 4 weeks.

Make Corrections to Your Car Title

While you are applying for a duplicate title, you can also use this opportunity to edit or correct any missing or out-of-date information.

When you submit your application, note any changes of address or new owners.

You cannot do this online, though, so prepare to make a trip to your local BMV service center if you want to edit any information on your car’s title.

Conclusion

Don’t let a damaged or missing car title bring you down.

You can quickly and easily request a certified duplicate of your vehicle’s title online from the comfort of your couch or in person at your nearest Indiana BMV service center.

Please note, though, if your vehicle was not originally registered in Indiana, you will have to request a duplicate title from the state in which you registered.
