What Is a Pillow Top Mattress?
Pillow top mattresses have a cushioned top layer, which is extremely comfortable and soft. The foam of the pillow top conforms to the sleeper’s body and so they sink into it comfortably.
The base of the mattress is made of springs or coils, to provide sturdy support.
How Long Do Pillow Top Mattresses Last?
Pillow top mattresses last between five and eight years before they need to be replaced, though this can differ depending on the quality of the product.
What Happens When a Pillow Top Mattress Sags?
Over time a mattress starts to sag either in the middle or at the side where you sleep. There are different factors that affect how much a pillow top mattress sags, such as the quality of the materials used.
If more foam is used for comfort but not enough springs or coils underneath for support, the material will sink more.

What Happens When a Pillow Top Mattress is Dented?
Body impressions and indentations in a pillow top mattress do not mean that it is poor quality. As the pillow top is supported by the foam, it can indent over time as you lie on it and sink into the foam, especially if you lie in the same place each night.
How Do You Revive a Two-Sided Pillow Top Mattress?
A two-sided pillow mattress is a mattress where it has the foam pillow top on both sides, on the top and the bottom.
A two-sided pillow mattress is incredibly easy to revive as you can flip the mattress once one side starts to sag, indent, or become uncomfortable.
You can continue to keep flipping the mattress for years and allow the foam to revive itself each time.
How Do You Revive a One-Sided Pillow Top Mattress?
A single-sided pillow top mattress is the most common kind and is where the top of the mattress has the comfortable foam pillow top, whereas the bottom is sturdy for support.
This type of pillow top mattress is unable to be flipped, as the bottom would be too hard and uncomfortable to sleep on.
Instead, a one-sided pillow top mattress can be revived by using a vacuum, plywood, or a mattress topper.
Using a vacuum is a great way to manually fluff up a pillow top mattress. Place the attachment onto your vacuum and use the suction to pull the filling back into place, pulling it back to where any indentations or sagging areas are.
Holding the attachment long enough for the material to be sucked up, then pull it to the area you want with your hand and release it.
You can use your hands to even out the top layer too, pushing the lumps through to other areas with the palms of your hands.
Plywood can temporarily fix a sagging mattress and increase the lifespan. Find the area that is sagging on the mattress, and then place a board of plywood which matches the size and shape of the area underneath that area of the mattress to increase the support from the bottom and push the area up to more firmly.
Mattress toppers provide an extra cushioned layer on top of a mattress, so if your mattress is sagging in one area the topper can even this layer out and make the bed more comfortable to sleep on.

How Do You Revive a Removable Pillow Top Mattress?
Pillow top mattresses with a removable top layer are the easiest to revive as you can unzip it, take the foam layer out of its pocket, and fluff it up.
You can fluff the layer up by placing it into a dryer with tennis balls. Or you can hang it on a clothesline and use a broom handle to beat it.
This way any lumps are beaten out and the cushion layer is fluffed evenly.
How Do You Care for a Pillow Top Mattress?
Cleaning your mattress regularly will make it last longer. Vacuum your mattress to clean off any crumbs, dust, or dirt, to get rid of mites and oils.
Cleaning any stains or liquid off the mattress will prevent the materials from breaking down.
Protecting your mattress with a cover to stop any dirt, food, or liquids from getting onto it will make it last for longer.
How Often Should You Rotate a Pillow Top Mattress?
A pillow top mattress should be rotated monthly to help preserve it. This means that you are changing the area that you are sleeping on and where all the weight and pressure goes so that the mattress indents less.
As one-sided pillow top mattresses cannot be flipped, rotating them regularly is a great way to prolong the mattress life.
When Should You Replace a Pillow Top Mattress?
You should replace your pillow top mattress when none of the above tips have worked, and the mattress has sags that cannot be plumped.
If you are uncomfortable, unsupported, and not getting a good night’s sleep because of your mattress, then it is time for it to be replaced. This is usually after between five and eight years.
