Do you know how long does motorcraft synthetic blend oil lasts? this is one of the questions our readers ask a lot. Well, we´ve got you covered.
GM vehicle owners intimately know what ACDelco is, Chrysler owners and enthusiasts have Mopar, while Ford owners turn to Motorcraft when in need of replacement parts.
And if you are a Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury; the owner who follows the manufacturer’s recommendations about your vehicle, very likely you will load it with Motorcraft synthetic blend oil.
But, then remains the question of how long does motorcraft synthetic blend oil last? On average you can expect motorcraft synthetic blend oil to last as long as 7,500 to 15,000 miles; some even last as long as 25,000 miles depending on the vehicles. However, If your vehicle is made before 2007, you should change the oil every 5,000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first. For newer vehicles, these numbers are 10,000 miles and 6 months.
Before getting into more details about the lifespan of the Motorcraft synthetic blend, let’s cover what it is.
What Is a Synthetic Blend Oil?
There are three types of engine oils depending on their source:
- Conventional (mineral) – distilled from crude oil
- Synthetic – created in a laboratory
- Blends – mixtures of the previous two types
Conventional or mineral oils are the engine oils that are produced from petroleum, or crude oil.
They are the oldest type and for various reasons the worst type, but because they are produced from what is left after gasoline and diesel are extracted from oil, they are the cheapest.
Synthetic oils are created in laboratories by chemical reactions that produce the base of them and then various additives are added to them.
From the performance perspective, these oils are the best, but also are the most expensive ones.
Blend oils are the mixture of the previous two types, that end up marrying the best of both types, high performance, and affordable price.
Why Does The Oil Age?
All oils slowly degrade over time, it’s only the question at which rate they do so.
There are many reasons for this, but in the car engine, the main culprit is the heat.
Heat works as a catalyst for all chemical reactions, so also to the degradation of oil and its oxidation.
Depending on the driving conditions, this degradation can be sped up significantly.
For example, exterior heat is decreasing the efficiency of your engine cooling system, which increases the temperature of the oil and the rate of aging.
Then, the frequent short trips also have a negative impact on the engine oil as it is not allowed to warm up enough for any possible water condensation in the system to evaporate.
How Long Does Motorcraft Synthetic Blend Oil Last?
The Motorcraft synthetic blend oil is rated for 10,000 miles, but this is a misleading figure you shouldn’t pay attention to.
It is the rating of how long it will keep its viscosity rating, which while a good indication of the health of the oil, is not the only thing that matters.
The most important number you should have in mind are 7,500 and 10,000, recommended mileage for an oil change by Ford.
Engine oil is not an expensive item and following the manufacturer’s recommendation will assure its longevity.
While it can keep its viscosity for a longer time and more miles, various additives, such as seal expanders and detergents will not last as long.
So, while the oil may keep its lubrication function, it can lose some of its protective functions.
Is Motorcraft Synthetic Blend Worth It?
Whether it is worth it or not depends on your point of view.
Because it is much more efficient than mineral oils, it is a better choice.
But, there is also a question of the brand-name markup it has, which may not be to everyone’s liking.
One thing that is certain, at least when it comes to Ford’s engines, is that it is good enough for them, and when you calculate how much it costs it will not lead you to poverty.
When choosing the proper oil, it is important that it meets the engine manufacturer’s specifications and that you change it as recommended.
What Are The High-Mileage Oils?
Depending on your point of view and the age of your engine, the high-mileage engine oils are either a meaningless marketing buzzword or a very good thing for your car.
While these engine oils are always advertised as being rated for 10, 15, or even 20 thousand miles; that is not their main advantage or benefit.
Such mileage ratings are something you should ignore, and change the oil as often as recommended by the manufacturer.
But there is one other benefit why you should use the high-mileage oils in older cars or engines with more than 80,000 miles on the clock, additives.
All engines have various parts that use seals, and over time they age and lose flexibility until they eventually break.
The high-mileage oils always contain additives that make them swell slightly, which both make them seal better but also last a bit longer.
Motorcraft synthetic blend engine oil is the recommended oil by Ford Motor Company for all of their engines.
Just like many other fully synthetic and blended oils, it is rated for 10,000 miles and it will keep its viscosity rating for that long.
But this is not the only important rating of any oil, and you should change it as frequently as recommended by the engine manufacturer.
For Ford’s engines, that is every 5,000 miles if made before 2007 and 7,500 if made later, or every 6 months irrespective of year of production.
