Who makes great value teriyaki beef jerky?

Because you will find great value teriyaki beef jerky when you are roaming the aisles of Walmart, you would be mistaken for thinking that it is in fact a Walmart product.

The beef jerky used to be particularly popular with men as it was classed as a high protein snack and was kept in the sports section.

However, Walmart rebranded their beef jerky and moved it to the snack section in order to also target their female audience.

Since then, it has become a household staple. But did you know that it is not actually a Walmart own product?

Although the beef jerky is indeed distributed and sold under Walmart the beef jerky itself is not made or packaged by Walmart but is actually done so by the company Jack Link’s (also known as Link Snacks, Inc.).

Link Snacks, Inc. is an American snack company that was founded in 1986 and also produces and sells their own brand of beef jerky.

What are the ingredients in great value teriyaki beef jerky?

The ingredients in great value teriyaki beef jerky are the following (from the lowest to highest amount):

Sodium nitrate, paprika, sodium erythorbate, hydrolyzed corn protein, flavoring, monosodium glutamate, maltodextrin, dried soy sauce, corn syrup solids, salt, sugar, water, beef.

For a comparison between the Walmart version of this teriyaki beef jerky and the Jack Link’s version listed below are all of the ingredients in Jack Link’s teriyaki beef jerky for comparison (again from the lowest to highest amount):

Citric acid, pineapple powder, beef stock, cultured celery extract, maltodextrin, flavors, yeast extract, hydrolyzed corn protein, soy sauce (wheat, soybean, salt), salt, brown sugar, sugar, water, beef.

As you can see even though great value teriyaki beef jerky is made by Jack Link’s it is not the same as their own brand of beef jerky and there are some key differences in their ingredients.

So, Walmart beef jerky does indeed stand on its own.

Both brands of teriyaki beef jerky will hence have their own unique taste and texture, meaning that they stand apart from one another and will appeal to different people.

Walmart does indeed have its own teriyaki beef jerky, but it just so happens to be made by another company that specializes in the production of beef jerky.

Why doesn’t Walmart make their own teriyaki beef jerky?

There are a number of reasons why Walmart would choose to outsource their production for their great value teriyaki beef jerky, one of which would be that they are simply not specialized enough in that field to warrant getting the facilities to produce and package the jerky.

They already have the facilities to market and sell the jerky, but not enough of their brand is dedicated to beef jerky that it would require such a large expense.

This is very common with a lot of businesses, and it is a great way for them to save money and ensure that the business succeeds.

Basically, you let the professionals do their job and do it well and you stick to doing what you are good at. For example, here, the experts in the beef jerky industry are clearly Jack Link’s, and the experts in the world of supermarkets (and grocery stores and selling in general) is Walmart.

So, by combining the two in their own individual areas of expertise you have a recipe for success.

Of course, Walmart has not simply taken another company’s product and relabeled it as their own. As you can see from the two ingredients listed above there are a number of key differences between the two sets of ingredients.

So, Jack link’s teriyaki beef jerky and great value beef jerky are not the same product being sold under two different names. They are indeed two different products. They just happen to be made by the same manufacturer.

Conclusion

Although many people often assume that a company produces and distributes all of its own-brand products they would be mistaken.

Often this is too costly and complicated for the business and would require them to be specialized in too many areas.

Instead, they outsource, leaving the professionals to do the job. However, they do create their own unique products but leave it up to the specialists to realize them. This is true with great value teriyaki beef jerky.

Because Walmart is such a diversified company, they cannot realistically manufacture all of their products themselves. So, for own-brand products such as beef jerky, where they only have a relatively small number of products, they outsource to other companies who specialize in the production of the product.

For their great value teriyaki beef jerky, Walmart have chosen to outsource to Jack Link’s, an American jerky specialist.
