Have you ever asked yourself or your friend if Whole Foods use, accepts, or takes Apple pay? Well, you are at the perfect place to find the answer to such a question.
Whole Food is a grocery chain and retailer whose primary focus is on organic and natural foods for healthier living and lifestyles.
As a store that takes its values from the growing embrace of sustainable agriculture and environment, it would make sense that their payment systems are up with the times.
So, does Whole Foods take Apple Pay? Yes, Whole Foods takes many forms of payment, including Apple pay. They also work with online retailers, such as Amazon, to facilitate online shopping and other modern conveniences.
If you’ve never been to Whole Foods, it’s highly recommended. Their stores have a rich environment with a premium feel and they only stock organic and natural food products on their shelves.
That doesn’t mean that you won’t run into a non-organic product here and there. However, since their name and brand are wrapped up in the value of natural and organic foods, it’s not often that you’ll find something different.

How Do You Pay With Apple Pay?
If you’ve never used Apple Pay before, you have to set it up on your iPhone before you get started.
Apple Pay works by storing your credit or debit card information—or your Apple Credit Card—onto your iPhone for a touchless, NFC-type payment system.
Wherever you see the Apple Pay logo, you simply hold your phone up to the payment scanner and Your iPhone will do the rest by communicating your payment info wirelessly.
To add your credit or debit card info to your Apple Wallet/Apple Pay app:
- Open your iPhone’s Home Screen
- Select Apple Wallet (Sometimes under the finances app block)
- Select the + sign in the upper, right-hand corner
- Select the card type that you want to add
- Select Continue
- Add your card with a photo or add it manually
Apple Pay is fairly simple to use in Whole Food grocery stores—or in any store that accepts Apple Pay—with either your iPhone or your Apple Watch.
Apple iPhone
- When you’re at the checkout and ready to pay, double click the side button
- Select the card you want to use (your default payment option shows up first)
- Hold your iPhone near the contactless reader
- The reader will usually display a ✔ or an OK
- Occasionally, you may have to enter a PIN#
Apple Watch
- Double click the side button
- Select your card (default option shows up first)
- Hold your Apple Watch near the contactless reader
- The reader will display an OK or a ✔
That’s it. It’s relatively simple. Since you can load up a digital Apple card with cash—much like PayPal—you can also use that as an option.
When your default credit or debit card initially pops up, scroll to your Apple Cash card and pay with the money you loaded on it.

Whole Foods Online With Apple Pay
Whole Foods conducts its online shopping through Amazon, a direct competitor with Apple when it comes to payment systems, some electronics, and some online shopping features. So, you can’t use your Apple Pay through Amazon.
One of the questions raised by this is whether or not you can pay through Whole Foods before it is delivered through Amazon Prime.
The problem is, you can only shop Whole Foods online through Amazon Prime, so there’s no getting around it.
However, Amazon will accept any debit or credit cards that you use through Apple Pay, so those will work.
Amazon will also accept your cash-loaded Apple card. Unfortunately, you have to use these things like you normally would, entering them through Amazon’s payment system.
It’s very easy to know who you can and cannot pay with your Apple Pay because the symbol for Apple Pay will generally pop up in the cart or in the final payment process for an online product.
Unfortunately, that’s the only way to order products from Whole Foods online at this time. Hopefully, they will make some additions in the future but you shouldn’t get your hopes up.
Amazon is a major partnership and a massive customer base for Whole Foods to reach.
How Secure Is Apple Pay With Whole Foods?
Whether or not you’re paying for items through Whole Foods or some other retailer, the security for Apply Pay remains the same. The following is the method in which Apple secures your payment and payment processing:
- Your card number is not stored on your Apple device
- Your card number is never shared with Apple Pay
- Apple creates a whole new device number specific to your phone, for each method of payment
- This Device Account Number is encrypted and stored on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac.
- When you make a payment, your payment is processed through this encrypted number
This is why Apple requires the participation of your banking institution. Most banks and credit unions are partnered with Apple for Apple Pay usage. However, if you are a member of a small, out-of-the-way banking institution, they may not be compatible with Apple Pay yet.
With a banking institution’s participation, Apple can link your device number with your banking institution.
In this way, Apple never needs your account info or personal, financial information, just the participation of your bank with Apple’s system.
It’s fairly intuitive and works very well.
It also means that you are actually safer paying with your Apple Pay at Whole Foods—or anywhere else for that matter—than you are with your standard debit or credit card.
Since your card can be stolen or the information hacked over a wireless connection, a meaningless, encrypted device number is of absolutely no use to anyone except for you, when you pay for an item.

All Things Considered
Can I use Apple Pay at whole foods? Of course, Whole Foods has been with Apple Pay for quite some time now, making its first announcement in October of 2014.
So, its readers are quite capable and familiar with Apple software. That includes every Whole Foods store in the U.S.
It’s a shame that the online marketplace for whole foods is limited to the Amazon ecosphere, because that places some limitations on the use of Apple Pay, at least somewhat.
However, it’s always possible that Amazon or Whole Foods will make allowances in the future.
