What Facts Should I Know Before I Take a Cash Advance From My Discover Credit Card?

Although a cash advance on your Discover credit card may seem an attractive short-term solution, it does come with its own set of disadvantages.

Unlike a cash transaction from your funds, you borrow cash from your credit card when you receive a cash advance from a teller, ATM, or access check.

When you take a cash advance off your Discover card, you will need to be aware of the following points.

Your Interest Rate Will Soar

Although Discover has some of the most competitive interest rates out there, these low rates will no longer apply once you commit to a cash advance.

The interest rate on a cash advance is significantly higher than standard credit card rates.

You should consult your cardholder agreement for the particular details of your cash advance rate.

You Will Lose Your Grace Period

Your Discover credit card purchases typically come with a grace period which means that they will not charge you internet if you pay your total balance by the due date each month.

Cash advances work differently as the interest begins to accumulate from the time you take the cash advance.

Without any grace period, even if you pay your borrowed sum back in full by the month-end, you will still be liable for interest on each day you took your cash advance.

Cash Advances Carry a Fee

Discover charges a fee for cash advances as either a set cash amount or a percentage of your total cash advance, depending on your cardholder agreement.

You will need to pay this fee with the grace-free daily interest rate, which may add up when you consider a credit card transaction with Discovery does not carry these costs.

ATM Fees Also Apply

Although a cash advance may be quick and easy, there are also sundry charges to consider. Some banks may charge an additional ATM fee for cash withdrawals from your credit card.

Some banks may also impose restrictions on how much cash you may draw from your Discover credit card.

Foreign Currency Fees

One of the most attractive benefits of the Discover credit card is that Discover does not charge for foreign transactions. Unfortunately, when you decide to take a cash advance, this perk falls away.

If you are abroad and attempt to use the cash advance feature, some institutions may load the foreign transaction fees up to three percent of your cash advance.

If you add that into the other expenses, you might not be making the best decision with your Discover credit.

How Much Will I End up Paying on a Discover Cash Advance?

To use an ATM withdrawal as an example of what a cash advance of your Discover card may cost you, let’s look at the various fees.

Discover has a high cash advance fee compared to other banking institutions and depending on which card you hold and your credit rating, the fees may fluctuate.

The discover fee for a cash advance is 5% of the total cash amount with a $10 minimum.

If you average out your Discovery cash advance interest, the Annual Percentage Rate is around 26.99%.

So, if you drew $500, your initial fee would be $25, plus the additional ATM fees of an average of $3. With the average current interest rates, your $500 advance may cost you around $11 over thirty days (if you have a bad credit history.)

So, if you do the math a quick cash advance may end up costing you:

$500+ $25 + $3 + $11 = 539.

Considering a credit card transaction paid back in a calendar month accrues no interest, that is a substantial difference in terms of cost.

What is a Discover Credit Card?

Dean Witter Financial Services, a subsidiary of Sears Roebuck and Co, rolled out the Discover credit card in the mid-1980s, which offered no annual fees and cashback rewards that were rather innovative at the time.

Unlike bank-issued credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa, Discover uses its own issuer and network through Discover Bank, a subsidiary of Discover financial services.

The Discover card went from strength to strength and is now the seventh-largest credit card issuer in the world and the third-largest credit brand in the US. Experts estimate that there are over 57 million credit card holders this year alone.

While Discover is one of the newcomers relative to the traditional credit card issuers, the company has acclaim for offering exceptional customer service.

In fact, J.D Power placed Discover in the number two position for customer satisfaction in the US for 2020, behind only American Express.

In this US Credit card Satisfaction Study, the Credit card providers were judged on six factors:

  • Customer interaction
  • Credit card terms
  • Communication
  • Services and benefits
  • Customer rewards
  • Key moments.

Discover Credit Cards Offerings

Discover introduced The Discover ‘it” card in 2013. The card is notable for its features that set it apart from many of its competitors, including:

  • No annual fees
  • No extra costs for late or missed payments
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Discover is represented in all states in the US
  • Cashback rewards for card spending
  • Free Fico score with each monthly statement.

The main draws of the Discover card types that ensure the company’s continuing success is:

  • The flagship Discover card offers 5% cashback for various changing categories and equals the cash bash amount at the first year’s end.
  • NHL, Cash Back, and Gas ; Restaurant cards allow 14 months of zero annual percentage for both purchases and transfers
  • Discover Student cards offer zero Annual percentage rate for purchases in the first six months of holding the Discover card.

Conclusion

Just because a cash advance off your Discover card is simple does not mean it is a good idea. Cash advances should be an absolute last resort or for emergencies when you have no other alternative.

With the amount you end up paying on a cash advance, it is best to pursue other venues should you require cash in a hurry.
