So, who makes Publix mayonnaise? The truth is we don’t know the answer to this for sure. However, the ingredient list for Publix mayonnaise is a dead ringer for the Great Value brand mayonnaise found at Wal-Mart. While many speculate that this comes from Kraft, there is no proof or documentation to verify this.

While it doesn’t prove anything, we can get a better guesstimate about who produces mayonnaise for Publix.

Why Don’t We Know Who Makes Publix Mayonnaise?

We did attempt to reach out to Publix about who produces their mayonnaise. After three days, we received a response from their customer care rep, Remi. This is the official statement from Publix:

“We appreciate you for reaching out to us with your product inquiry. Unfortunately, we do not provide the names of our suppliers for our private label items. We apologize that we are unable to assist you with this request.”

So, for whatever reason, we will never know for certain who manufactures Publix mayonnaise. However, with a little searching and comparing of other brands, we can breakdown the possibilities by the process of deduction.

Which Other Brands Compare to Publix Mayonnaise?

After digging around and comparing ingredient labels, the likely comparison is with Walmart’s Great Value mayonnaise but there are also some stark similarities with Duke mayonnaise.

None of these say who produces their mayo. Therefore, let’s look at the ingredients of all three.

How Do the Nutrition Labels Compare with Each Brand of Mayonnaise?

As you can see from the table, there is no ingredient difference between the mayonnaise offered by Publix or Great Value.

While there are some marked variations with Duke’s there are some very similar elements worth noting. This is particularly because only these three brands mention paprika as part of the recipe.

There is further evidence for the similarities when you read the nutrition facts of all three brands. The calories, fat, sodium, and carbohydrates for Publix and Great Value are the same exactly. For one tablespoon (13 grams):

• Carbohydrates: 0g
• Fat: 10g
• Cholesterol: 5mg
• Sodium: 70mg

However, when you look at Duke’s Mayonnaise, there are 100 calories, 12 grams of fat, 10 milligrams of cholesterol and a higher mineral content with things like potassium and calcium. But the sodium content is still the same.

Therefore, it’s highly unlikely that Duke’s has the same supplier as Wal-Mart or Publix for their private-label mayonnaise.

How Does Mayonnaise from Wal-Mart, Publix & Kraft Compare with Each Other?

Since Wal-Mart and Publix are dead ringers, they’re worth looking into further. There is absolutely no variation between them in terms of ingredients or nutrition facts.

Such evidence is a good sign they come from the same place. While many people assume it comes from Kraft, we can’t say that this is a fact.

However, there are some remarkable similarities between Kraft’s Real Mayonnaise when compared with the ones from Publix and Wal-Mart. This is true for ingredients as well as nutritional facts.

Kraft Ingredients

Kraft’s mayo contains soybean oil, water, vinegar, eggs, egg yolks, natural flavors, and lemon juice concentrate as well as less than 2% of things like salt and sugar.

Plus, they also incorporate calcium disodium EDTA. However, they also have ingredients listed such as dried onion, dried garlic, and paprika.

General Labeling Practices

These last three ingredients present the argument for how Kraft may not be the private label manufacturer for Publix and Wal-Mart mayo.

However, you have to understand labeling practices and what’s acceptable per FDA regulations.

In Publix and Great Value mayonnaise products, they mention “natural flavors.” This is a generic ingredient to protect proprietary information about the recipe.

Therefore, some companies can list these or not depending on their preferences. Things like garlic, onion, and paprika fall under the category of “natural flavors.”

Mirrored Nutritional Facts

Aside from that, the nutrition labels are sort of a dead giveaway. Like Publix and Wal-Mart, Kraft’s nutritional facts are the same. 90 calories per serving with 10 grams of fat, 5 milligrams of cholesterol, and 70 milligrams of sodium.

Another factor that probably points to Kraft is the ability of both Publix and Wal-Mart to sell their private label mayonnaise at a discounted price.

Kraft’s mass production capabilities would make this very possible. So, it’s not a stretch to deduce they make mayo for Publix and Wal-Mart.

Conclusion

While Publix admits they source their private label products elsewhere, they won’t tell us who that is. But, we can safely assume it’s Kraft since the ingredients and nutritional facts are nearly the same.
