Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller: 11 Facts You Should Know (Explained)

progidy Wireless Brake Controller

The Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller is easily one of the most popular brake controllers on the market.

Well, at least of the wireless variety. So, what is it all about? We want to answer all of your most pressing questions right here!

What is the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller?

The Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller is a proportional brake controller from Tekonsha, one of the biggest manufacturers of towing accessories in the world.

While they mostly offered wired brake controllers, they have recently started to offer a wireless option.

With a wireless brake controller, you do not have to worry about wiring the system in. In fact, it is about as ‘plug and play’ as you can get.

It takes mere seconds to install on a vehicle, and you can carry it from vehicle to vehicle too. As long as the other vehicle has a 7-point plug on the back, it will work.

The Features of The Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller

There are so many features that have been loaded into the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller that it is tough for us to know exactly where to begin.

In fact, there are so many features in this wireless brake controller that we may even miss a couple. However, we can assure you, we have covered all of the features that you need to know about.

Proportional Braking System

So, what is that proportional braking system all about?

Well, it is a system that detects the type of braking that you are doing. For example, it will know if you are braking hard, or if you are gradually slowing down. The same type of braking will be applied to the electric brakes on your trailer. This helps toi ensure that you have as much control over the trailer.

Inside of the driver cab, you will have the remote control for the wireless braking system. You barely need to touch this.

This connects via Bluetooth to the receiver at the back of the vehicle (i.e. the part that controls the brakeS)

Bluetooth has a decent range, and it is the best type of tech to use here. Since it is short-range, you do not have to worry about other people’s radio signals getting in the way of the connection.

This is important when you are out there on the road.

Automatic Leveling Ability

Now, you should always do your best to ensure that the controller is mounted level on the trailer. However, just in case it is knocked around a little bit when you are driving, the brake controller has an automatic leveling ability built into it.

This can come in handy. It ensures that your wireless brake controller will always be able to function properly.

Manual Override Button

If you need to manually control the brakes for whatever reason, then you can hit the manual override button.

Automatic Configuration

You will barely have to put any effort into getting the wireless brake controller set up with the system. It is going to all be done automatically.

It is important that you read through the manual that comes with your Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller so you do it properly.

Boost Levels

There are three boost levels built into the remote control. As time goes on (i.e. when the brakes warm up), you may want to hit that boost button to ensure that the brakes have the same ‘bite’ that they did when you first started to drive.

Diagnostic Checks

The brake controller will always be monitoring the system for you. If it spots any issues, then you will be automatically alerted so that you can rectify them.

How Does the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller Work?

A lot of people seem to believe that because a wireless system like this isn’t wired in, it will have a tough time knowing when to brake properly. This isn’t actually going to be the case

πŸ‘‰ Inside of the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller is a small sensor. This sensor detects when the vehicle has started to brake (and it will know the type of braking being carried out).

This will send a signal to the brakes of the trailer, and it will trigger their electric brakes too!

Honestly, it is simple technology. It works just as well as the wired options. You just have to make sure that you hook up everything properly when you carry out the initial installation.

Do You Need the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller?

If you have an electric braking system, then you need a brake controller. The brakes won’t work without one. While you do not necessarily need this offering from Prodigy, we do recommend it. Not only is it going to be affordable, but it is going to be quick to install. You can even do it yourself in a couple of minutes.

πŸ‘‰ This brake controller is actually far, far superior to wired options. With a wired option, the interior of your vehicle will have to be modified to accommodate the controls.

You will also need to talk to a mechanic about wiring the vehicle up.

This can get pretty expensive.

πŸ‘‰ I recommend that you buy a wireless brake controller like this one if you are planning on towing trailers with multiple vehicles.

It actually works pretty well for businesses as they do not have to worry about a lot of costly vehicle modifications.

It also means that their employees will be able to use whatever vehicle they wish.

How Do You Install the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller?

We know that there are a lot of people that are planning to convert to wireless brake controllers. Rest assured, if you already have a wired system in place, you do not need to remove it.

Once you have the Prodigy Wireless Brake Controller installed, it will take priority over the wired system. If you removed the wireless controller, then your wired system will be functional again.

Installing is dead simple. The device is pretty sleek and it should be obvious what goes wear.

You will need to start by installing the brake controller onto the trailer. You can screw it into place. Make sure it is level.

Remember, your bakes will need to plug into the socket. The plug on the other end of the brake controller will need to be plugged into the 7-way.

Once you switch the vehicle on, the device is going to be powered. However, you aren’t quite done yet.

πŸ‘‰ Inside of the vehicle, you will need to plug the remote control into a power socket. It requires a 12V power system.

If you have a cigarette lighter in your vehicle, then it is going to be plugging directly into that. We suggest that you buy a small holder for the controller. It makes it a little bit more convenient to use.

πŸ‘‰ Once you have both the brake controller and the remote control powered, then you can connect the two of them up via Bluetooth. You will need to consult the instruction manual that came with your controller here.

This is because the process can vary. Once the two are connected up, then you likely will not have to create that connection again, even if you move the brake controller to a new vehicle.

Remember, a remote control can only be paired to a single brake controller!

If your trailer hasn’t been connected up to the vehicle, then make sure that you do so. You will then need to find a flat area to be on.

πŸ‘‰ Follow the instructions for the remote control to get the brake controller to automatically adjust to the weight of the trailer.

You can then drive around a little bit at 25mph to ensure that the braking system works properly. You can fine tune the system a little bit from the remote control if you wish.

That is honestly all that you need to do to get the system up and running. It is a dead simple process, and once you have done it once, you will be able to do it in record time after that!

Remember, the system will be automatically adjusting as you drive, so you really don’t need to do anything.

What Happens if the Remote Control Fails?

Well, nothing.

You won’t be able to make any adjustments to the braking system, and you will not be able to use the manual override. However, there won’t actually be any issues with the braking should the remote control fail. however, Tekonsha products are built to such a high quality that we doubt that there is even the smallest risk of your system failing anyway.

πŸ‘‰ The reason why there is no problem is because the braking system will remember the settings that it received last. It is not constantly looking for new settings from the remote control.

In fact, other than not being able to communicate with the control, nothing changes for the braking control. You will still have that high quality braking experience when you are out there on the road.

πŸ‘‰ If you do break your remote control, then you will likely be able to purchase a spare from Tekonsha.

A remote control is not specific to a brake controller. Although, once it has been paired up with a brake controller, it will only work with that one until it has been unpaired! This is going to be far, far cheaper than purchasing a brand new system, right?
