The most remarkable thing about Toyota is the fact that its legendary longevity has lasted for decades.

So, is the Toyota factory warranty transferable? Yes, Toyota’s factory warranty is transferable, with some stipulations. When it comes to Toyota’s warranty, however, it’s pretty run-of-the-mill, and not much separates it from the generic warranties on offer by most manufacturers.

Fortunately, Toyota doesn’t need to offer much in the way of warranty coverage because the reliability ratings for most Toyota vehicles are through the roof.

When you purchase a Toyota, especially a pickup, you can expect it to last a very long time. 

Specifics of Toyota’s Warranty

Toyota offers what would be easily considered an industry-standard warranty. Of course, you will get the basic coverage along with a powertrain warranty and several other goodies that most people don’t think about when it comes to warranties.

• Basic Coverage lasts 3 years or 36,000miles
• Powertrain coverage is 5 years or 60,000 miles
• The restraint system warranty matches the powertrain warranty for years and miles
• 60 months of corrosion perforation coverage
• Emissions coverage is 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first

Toyota’s warranty coverages also include their hybrid vehicles, where the coverage amount is arguably a little better.

You get a year of roadside assistance which includes towing, delivering your fuel to you if you run out of gas, flat tire coverage, and jump-starts.

Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Warranty

Toyota offers a pretty good warranty for their certified used vehicles, which includes comprehensive warranty coverage, a limited, 7-year powertrain warranty with 100,000 miles, and one year of roadside assistance service.

What’s Not Covered in the Toyota Warranty?

Like every warranty, there are always exclusions or parts that are ill-defined or just simply not covered. Most of these things are stuff that is out of Toyota’s control and completely in yours.

• Tires are not covered, however, you do get a free tire service with the roadside assistance portion of the warranty
• The typical, everyday wear and tear that your Toyota undergoes is not going to be covered
• Maintenance services are not covered, such as oil changes, fluid top-offs, brake pads, etc.
• If you like to take your Toyota mudding, it’s not going to be covered, along with theft, fire, misuse, and neglect

Toyota Warranty Transfer Limitations

While the warranty is definitely transferable to a second owner, there are some limits on what Toyota is willing to give to the new owner of a used Toyota.

Also, certain states change the nature of the warranty altogether.

If you happen to live in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, or Florida, you don’t get the same warranty coverage when you transfer the warranty. It’s entirely different.

In those states, the transferred warranty coverage also begins on January 1 of the date of the vehicle, which may or may not make the whole transfer of the warranty nonsensical.

Puerto Rico and Hawaii don’t allow Toyota warranty transfers at all. 

Transferring Toyota Extended Warranties

Toyota’s extended warranty is not technically a Toyota warranty, but one purchased through a third-party, via Toyota. These warranties are also transferable; however, you will have to go through the third-party 

When you purchase an extended warranty for your Toyota, you will sign a Vehicle Service Agreement and keep the paperwork on you throughout the term of your warranty. 

You can transfer this warranty to a new owner; however, you have to contact the third-party, through which you signed the service agreement. 

They will send you a transfer form and the headache begin.

It’s not a headache because it’s complicated, it’s a headache because it typically takes a very long time, upwards of 6 weeks in most cases because it’s primarily done by mail.

Then you have to consider the processing time, which always takes a good 5 to 7 business days.

One of the easiest ways to tell if you can transfer your Toyota extended warranty is by checking your VIN by going to Toyota’s website.

All warranties should be directly associated with and linked to your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), so the warranty travels by the car and not the owner.

Lastly, you will often have to pay a service fee, which in most cases will run you around $100. When it’s all said and done, however, the third-party service will notify you that the transfer of the extended warranty coverage was successful. 

Toyota Extended Warranty Coverage

Things get a bit complicated because there is more than one extended warranty to choose from, all of which Toyota decided to label as if they were medical plans.

You have the platinum package, gold package, and the powertrain package.

The powertrain package is the cheapest option and covers the basic essentials that the vehicle needs to run, including the transmission, engine, and axle.

The gold package steps it up a little by adding coverage for an additional 2 years. Otherwise, it’s an exact, carbon copy of the powertrain package.

The gold package doesn’t add anything other than the two years, so time is all you are paying for. 

The best of the best package is the platinum package which includes the entire powertrain package, the additional two years of the gold package, and coverage for the electrical connections, chassis, suspension, steering, fuel, and cooling system, brakes, computer, and more.

It also extends up to 125,000 miles. You can purchase a platinum plan at 50,000 extra miles, but you get a choice, so it’s essentially a multi-tiered platinum plan.

It’s probably worth the money to go ahead with the 125,000 miles unless you are planning on selling the Toyota pretty soon.

Final Thoughts

The good thing about Toyota’s warranty is that even though it’s not the most robust warranty in history, it is transferable.

Also, an extended warranty with Toyota is also transferable, and the extended warranty is a whole lot better than the first.
