Why Is There Caffeine In A Decaf Coffee?

Dunkin Donuts is not the only coffee brand that has caffeine in its decaf coffee. As it turns out, all decaffeinated coffee is still going to have a little bit of caffeine in it.

It turns out that the process of decaffeinating coffee is complicated, imperfect, and time-consuming. According to the FDA, it is all but impossible to completely remove caffeine from a coffee bean.

The most popular decaffeination technique is called solvent extraction. During this, green coffee beans are collected and dried.

Before they are roasted, they are soaked in a solution that contains some sort of solvent. Two of the most common solvents that are used are methylene chloride and ethyl acetate.

This is not the only decaffeination technique, it can also be done with water and carbon dioxide.

When making decaf coffee, there are usually several rounds of caffeine extraction to get as much caffeine out of the bean as possible.

The number of extractions can vary and so does the method of extraction. Regardless, experts agree that it is not possible to remove all of the caffeine from a coffee bean.

This is because the effectiveness of the solvents at pulling caffeine out of the coffee bean decreases as more caffeine is removed.

After a certain point, the extraction methods stop being effective even though there is still a small touch of caffeine left in the beans.

Is Dunkin Donuts Decaf Coffee Still Good?

Even though there is only a little bit of caffeine in it, decaf coffee from Dunkin Donuts still tastes great. The nutritional value of decaf coffee is similar to regular caffeinated coffee, minus the caffeine content.

Some people do have concerns about methylene chloride, but scientists say that this is not a necessary concern. It is harmful to inhale small amounts of methylene chloride, but the FDA says that the amount of methylene chloride in decaffeinated coffee is just a trace amount that is not enough to be harmful to humans.

Dunkin Donuts Decaf Coffee Compared To Other Brands

Even though Dunkin Donuts has a small amount of caffeine in it, it is nowhere close to the amount of caffeine in their regular caffeinated coffee. It is also lower than the caffeine content of most rival decaffeinated coffee brands.

Dunkin Donuts’ regular coffee has more than twenty times the amount of caffeine that their decaffeinated coffee has. The largest decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts has around 15 mg of caffeine in it. The smallest regular coffee has 295 mg and their largest regular coffee has 709 mg.

But how does Dunkin Donuts decaf coffee compare to other brands of decaf?

Well, Dunkin Donuts has roughly half the caffeine content that is in a cup of Starbucks’ Pike Place Roast brand of decaf coffee.

In fact, the smallest decaf coffee at Starbucks still has more caffeine than a large decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts. A 10 oz decaf cup at Starbucks still has 20 mg of caffeine. A 24 oz decaf at Dunkin Donuts only has 15 mg of caffeine.

Mcdonald’s and Dunkin Donuts have similar amounts of caffeine in their decaf coffee, but Mcdonald’s still has a little bit more. A 10 to 12-ounce cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts only has 7 mg of caffeine, while the same cup at Mcdonald’s will have 8 mg. It is close, but Dunkin Donuts slightly wins out.

Meanwhile, a medium decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts has about 10 mg for 14 to 16 oz of decaf coffee. The same amount of decaf coffee at Mcdonald’s has 11 mg.

The difference is almost negligible, but Dunkin Donuts has a little bit less caffeine than Mcdonald’s. Even a large decaf coffee from McDonald’ will still have up to 18 mg of caffeine, compared to 15 mg of caffeine at Dunkin Donuts.

Dunkin Donuts decaf coffee is even comparable to a cup of decaf coffee that you brew yourself. There is roughly the same amount of caffeine in the average home-brewed brand of decaf coffee as there is in the decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts.

In fact, the only way that you will find a decaf coffee with significantly less caffeine than the decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts is to use an average pack of decaf instant coffee.

On average, instant decaf coffee has as little as 3 mg of caffeine for a 10-12 oz cup and as much as 7.5 mg of caffeine for a 24 oz cup. The largest cup of instant decaf coffee still has less caffeine than the smallest decaf at Dunkin Donuts.

Final Thoughts

Even though it is called “decaf” there is still a little bit of caffeine in a decaf coffee from Dunkin Donuts. That said, there is less caffeine in a decaf coffee at Dunkin Donuts than there is in most brands of decaf coffee.
